BrummyGit Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 My 1 year old TDi 150 has lost it's booster heater in the last few weeks. It has worked this season as I recall the feeling of relief when I spotted the smoke and caught a nose full of the jet engine smell, but it is not even attempting to fire up now (I've sat at the side of the car and the fan never starts). It's going into Fraud tomorrow so hopefully it will come back working, but I've started to wonder why it would fail so early. My car is regularly started 1st thing in a morning just to move it onto the road so my wife can get her car out which means the engine probably runs for no more than a minute, and so I guess that the booster is part way through starting up when the engine is turned off. I'm wondering if this is triggering errors which will cause the booster to stop attempting after 5 failures? Additionally does anyone know if the previous errors which are logged get cleared when the heater runs correctly or will 5 errors in the life of the car be enough to disable it? Thanks Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 IIRC once you've hit the 5 times of not starting the codes will need resetting before it'll try and fire up again. Whether short starts like you described would trigger the codes I'm not certain, sorry. I'm sure someone will be along soon to advise. Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 The no start code will only be stored if the required elapsed time has indeed elapsed if the ignition is terminated before full running of the booster it will not register a code but it will cause a very quick build up of soot as the next time it tries to start it will already be saturated with unburnt fuel. The solution would be to start and move the car but to leave it running until the booster has started its burn cycle then th eglow plug will not be left soaked inburnt fuel. And subseequently the 5 starts and now booster start will log into the ECU as the glowplug has now failed and this is correct but when the reset is doen the register will be empty waiting for the booster failure cycle to begin again. I have had to carryout this routine myself as the car as a taxi has very short duration of journeys and if this occurs at the start of a session then I too maintian the engine until the booster has successfully lit. Should be ok when you get it back. Quote
BrummyGit Posted November 19, 2006 Author Report Posted November 19, 2006 Wow!!! Thanks for the speedy replies Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 We do all aim to please    ^_^ Quote
BrummyGit Posted November 20, 2006 Author Report Posted November 20, 2006 The car is back from the dealer today. The diagnosis is that a new glow plug is required - no surprise there then  I just have to wait until 1st December for a courtesy car and the part to arrive. Interestingly I was told there is a modified version - on a Nov 06 car. I'm amazed that my car does not have any revised parts being so late in the production run. Hopefully it will reduce the likelyhood of the same happening again <yeah right :) > After picking it up this evening it sounds like there may be something loose under the sill as I had a rattle on the way home. Has anyone had this after the booster has been fixed? I gave it a quick wobble when I got home and it seems fairly sturdy. Quote
NikpV Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 IIRC the air intake goes through the sill (with a rubber grommet) perhaps they've loosened it and its now rattling in the hole :) of course I may be misremembering and talking b*llocks if so please ignore - everybody else does Quote
jkspoff Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 My dealer wasn't even aware of the auxillary booster heater, when I enquired whilst it was on the ramp having something else done, they scratched their heads and said 'no idea what that is mate'. I was testing them on their knowledge which was obviously very limited, never been back to that garage again ! :P Quote
